Barcelona À Table was born of a simple frustration: we moved to this city, followed the “trusted” guides, and ate badly. Too many opinions were for sale — the free tasting menu, the sponsored post, the friendly retainer. So we started keeping our own score.

We are three friends who moved to Barcelona more than five years ago from New York, San Francisco and Paris. Between us we spent over a decade owning and running restaurants and wine bars in the United States. We know what a well-run room feels like from both sides of the pass.

How we review

Every venue is visited by at least two of us — ideally all three. We book under ordinary names or walk in unannounced. We never tell a restaurant we are coming, we never accept an invitation, and we always pay the bill in full. We photograph nothing and we identify ourselves to no one.

After each visit, each reviewer independently writes notes and scores the venue across six categories: cleanliness, comfort, food, wine, service and the overall experience. The scores you see are the aggregate. When a venue changes — for better or worse — we go back, and the review is updated for the new year.

What the scores mean

“The Experience” is the number we care about most: a great meal doesn’t count for much if the wine program is erratic, the staff is rude, or the service takes ages. Consistency across food, wine and hospitality is what separates the venues at the top of our rankings.

Independence

No venue has ever paid to appear on this site, and none ever will. There is no advertising, no affiliate program and no sponsored content. This is a reader’s guide, not a brochure.
